I should preface by saying that I am only reviewing the Monterey Jack flavor and not the others. With that said, I thought this was so disgusting! It was so disgusting that I threw it away (which I really don’t do). It says it melts, which it doesn’t. Although, I have heard some people say that you have to cook it at a really high temperature (400+ degrees). I can really only imagine doing that for a pizza. After tasting this and throwing it away, I looked up on Veggie Boards what others had to say. I think these people are deluding themselves. However, a few people were reasonable (and by that I mean they agree with me
).
The Monterey Jack smelled disgusting, tasted disgusting, and felt disgusting. It smelled like cottage cheese, tasted bland like eating a raw block of tofu, and it felt like tofu just removed from the water. GROSS! I guess real dairy cheese is just too hard to replace/imitate. It wasn’t cheap either. It was a little over $3. I might as well just bought a block of tofu for half the price. I guess what I am trying to get across is how disgusting and disappointing this was. I didn’t even assume it would be close to cheese but I thought it would still have its own tasty, unique flavor. It’s a shame because Follow Your Heart makes Vegenaise which is quite good, maybe even better than egg-based mayo.
AVOID

Oh, wow. Sorry this wasn’t that good. You know, I think it is really difficult to find good fake cheese. The best I’ve tasted so far has been rice slices – some of them contain casein so are not vegan. But again, not cheap (but neither is real cheese, LOL).

I think I am going to just stick to real cheese. I was just experimenting for when it comes to cooking for Vegans.

No, it doesn’t melt at all!! I can’t believe they wrote that on the pkg. We tried it on nachos the first time, it was better in grilled cheese, but I think it would be best in something saucy like lasagna.

My daughter begged me and begged me to buy ‘fake’ cheese. I knew it would be horrible but I finally gave in. (I can’t remember what brand.) She was so excited as she unwrapped a little square – popped it in her mouth and quickly spit it out in horror. LOL I may or may not have said, “I told ya so!” LOL

I really don’t understand how people say this stuff is great. At least she tried and won’t want it any longer.

Weird, I don’t think it’s that bad. I usually get the mozz or cheddar and I like it in lasagna, on pizza, etc. It’s best when accompanied by a stronger flavor but I even like grilled cheese with it. It does melt, too, it just needs coaxing.
My boyfriend (not even vegetarian) however, hates it and will not touch it with a 10 foot pole. And I don’t think I’m deluding myself, because I don’t miss cheese (although i loved it) and I know this tastes nothing like real cheese!

Hi Charlotte,
But to each their own. Enjoy!
I haven’t had the other flavors so I can’t give my two cents about that but I still stand by my original disgusted opinion.

I don’t remember what the Monterey Jack tasted like, but I like the Mozzarella on pizza. I also can’t get it to melt but the Follow Your Heart Cafe can. I think they use magic or something.

That’s too bad that you didn’t appreciate it, Ariell. I hope your review doesn’t negatively influence too many people. I think it tastes awesome, and it is better on pizza than the Follow Your Heart mozzarella.
As for it melting, I have seen mixed results, but cooking at high oven temperatures or even melting it into a sauce or in a pan will definitely work. I developed my own trick though.
When making a pizza for example, after grating the cheese, I pop some of it in the microwave for a minute to melt it down. Then, I sort of drizzle it over the pizza. After baking, it resembles the same golden gooey layer as dairy cheese. For a vegan pizza that impresses, try this method.
